It’s hard to believe, but Draft Day is just around the corner. You can almost hear the sweet sounds of Jets fans screaming at their televisions already.
This time next month we’ll be dissecting and deconstructing the Atlanta Falcons’ draft haul — until then, we’ll take the news as it comes. That news today is the release of Atlanta’s preseason slate of opponents.
On the docket? Clashes at the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, and at-home matchups against the Arizona Cardinals and [sarcasm engaged] preseason nemesis Jacksonville Jaguars. Dates have yet to be announced, but we finally know who we will face in the final tune-ups for the 2017 season.
Atlanta went 3-1 in the preseason last year, tallying victories against Washington, Cleveland, and Jacksonville, while dropping one against Miami at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Roster competitions and rookie intrigue aside, there’s never much sense in putting too much stock in preseason games. History shows that the preseason is not an accurate indicator as to a team’s regular season performance, but the Falcons harnessed last year’s early momentum en route to their most successful season in years. Watch closely; watch carefully — but always keep those caveats in mind.
A totally Falconian storyline to watch here will be the status and availability of Mercedes Benz Stadium for Atlanta’s preseason games. Delayed — yet again — due to its retractable roof’s seeming aversion to adhering to proper deadlines. Fingers crossed on the Falcons taking the field in their brand new, sparkly, state-of-the-art stadium come preseason time.
The new season is quickly approaching, Falcons fans. Buckle up.
